Field Trips
Students had an opportunity to explore the
community's museums, parks, and other commo
n
areas to view 250 robots in action. In celebration of
Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary,
Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute worked with the local attractions to
produce these exhibits. This gave students the remarkable experience of
learning about the field of robotics and its applications in conjunction
with getting a chance to visit three of Pittsburgh's museums for free!
One of QoLT's industry partners, Blueroof Technologies uses innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship to develop state-of-the-art living facilities that will keep senior citizens safer, healthier, and living independently at home as long as possible. Students spend a day at Blueroof touring the facilities and in particular, the first smart cottage developed by Blueroof. Additionally, students learn about "Senior Smart Technology." Senior Smart Technology focuses on Information Technology, sensors, and computer hardware and software to monitor and optimize the lives of senior citizens, thereby avoiding or postponing institutional care by providing a safe home environment.
Center for
Assistive Technology
The Center for Assistive Technology (CAT) provides the students with a 1-day observation of the clinical environment. Since our research combines technology and clinical practice, it is important to understand both the clinical aspect and how this technology directly affects end users. The CAT identifies a client's assistive technology needs and recommends an appropriate device or product to help them attain their highest level of functioning and self-sufficiency. Students accompany the CAT staff as they meet with clients and report on their experience in a short reflection paper afterwards.
