"I was involved "first hand" in the daily functions of a human research project. The experience was invaluable and helped me to better understand HIPPA regulations.  I could ask any question and was given thorough answers.  My mentor was easy to get along with we were a good functioning team.  She made me feel appreciated and happy.  I enjoyed conducting the phone interviews with the research subjects.  I met so many interesting people - inspiring people!  Also I enjoyed learning about other's projects - projects that will improve people's lives.  I greatly enjoyed my experience working at HERL." "For the past eight weeks I have worked in the machine shop at HERL, aiding numerous projects as they passed through the development process. The experience has been invaluable to me as a high school student learning the basics of industry. Throughout the summer, I have watched the process as ideas turn into designs, designs into parts, parts into products. Personally, I have developed a sound base of knowledge and skill using traditional techniques as well as more advanced designing and programming skills for machines such as the CNC Mill and CNC Lathe. Also, I have been exposed to the cutting edge of technology with machines such as the wire EDM. I have learned what is possible, along with what is practical from watching the development process firsthand.

Beyond this, I have been heavily involved in the wheelchair testing process in my time here at HERL, learning what will happen to products once they enter the real world and how different designs hold up under stress.

My most valuable experience here at HERL, however, has been the people. In a lab full of graduate students, I have gained many perspectives on college life and further education. I now have a sense for what paths are available to various majors and can better choose my own educational experience." (by Joe Ulerich)

"My summer internship at HERL was a great experience. The dedicated faculty, staff and students at HERL fostered an environment which promoted learning and growth. I gained knowledge and acquired many skills that both reinforced and enhanced my bioengineering background. My favorite part of the internship was designing parts for my project and then fabricating the parts using a variety of equipment in the machine shop. It was extremely rewarding to see a drawing become a reality. Interning at HERL was a very valuable experience." (by Abbie Shoemaker)
