Proof of Concept: Remote Controlled Retractable Cane for the Visually Impaired
Collaboration with Atlanta VA
Principal Investigator/s: Rory Cooper, PhD, Bruce Blasch, PhD
10/2002 – 9/2004
Two different versions of the remotely retractable training cane have been designed and fabricated. One features a spring retraction mechanism and the other utilizes a lead screw mechanism. Both canes have the ability to be retracted 6 inches when initiated by a remote control. The canes were sent to Dr. Blasch in Atlanta were some subject testing was completed. Dr. Blasch has returned the canes and suggested some improvements to the design of the canes to enhance reliability. A conference paper describing the initial design of the spring retraction cane was accepted to the 2004 Annual Conference of RESNA entitled “Design of a Spring Mechanism Retractable Training Cane”.
Some design improvements were made and the canes were sent back to Dr. Blasch. An invention discloser has been completed and is awaiting final approval from Dr. Blasch. A full manuscript is currently in progress.
